Our fish

Rainbow trout and Arctic char from cold lakes

Cold water and slow growth give firm flesh and good flavour.

Rainbow trout

Oncorhynchus mykiss

Rainbow trout is our main species. In Sweden it is often called rainbow salmon, but it is more closely related to Arctic char than to salmon; the species diverged 26–30 million years ago. With us, rainbow trout stay for two to three seasons before reaching 2.5–3 kg.

  • 2–3 seasons in the lake
  • Harvest weight 2.5–3 kg

Arctic char

Salvelinus alpinus

Arctic char is farmed on a smaller scale. It is a smaller fish and stays for one to two years before reaching around 1–1.5 kg.

  • 1–2 years in the lake
  • Harvest weight 1–1.5 kg

How the fish are raised

The fish arrive at the lake sites as juveniles weighing between 20 and 200 grams. They are stocked in open net pens, where they swim freely in the lake water within an area bounded by nets.

Over two to three seasons the fish experience the natural changes of the seasons, with ice cover and spring floods. The feed is formulated for each species and age and mimics the nutrition found in the wild. The cold water and the feed result in slow growth, which gives the flesh firmness and flavour.

Inspection below the surface

Divers check nets and moorings regularly. Intact, clean nets are important both for the wellbeing of the fish and to make sure no fish escape.
